Poly(methyl methacrylate), also called PMMA, is a low cost thermoplastic polymer with many applications to everyday life. PMMA is commercially important acrylic polymer and is sold under several trade names including Plexiglas® and Acrylite®. High transparency makes PMMA an ideal replacement for glass where impact or weight is a concern. PMMA is compatible with human tissue making it an important material for transplants and prosthetics, especially in the field of ophthalmology because of its transparent properties.
Isotactic PMMA forms a double-strand helix in polymer monolayers. The glass transition temperature (Tg) is lower for iostactic than syndiotactic PMMA. Isotactic PMMA hydrolyze more rapidly than syndiotactic PMMA.REFERENCE STANDARD
