Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)
- CAS Numbers: 26680-10-4 (D,L), 33135-50-1 (L)
The most common biodegradable polymer for medical devices. Offers structural stability and a biodegradation timeline of 6-24 months.
Poly(lactide-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)
- CAS Numbers: 26780-50-7 (D,L), 30846-39-0 (L)
The addition of glycolide subunits allows for the physiological lifetime of polylactides to be finely tuned. Typically, 50/50 will have the most rapid breakdown in physiological conditions.
